First things first, you need to clean the wood in question. A water blaster is particularly helpful, though if you do not have one of these you can just use a scrubbing brush. It is best to do this during summer so the wood has a chance to dry out quickly.
There are a number of chemical treatments that can be applied to kill the fungi though these need to be used in conjunction with other strategies. These chemical treatments need to be applied after the wood has been cleaned and dried off and should be reapplied as often as possible.
Another thing that you need to do is to protect the wood from getting wet. This means setting wood posts in concrete, making sure that sprinkler systems are far away and keeping vines and creepers off your woodwork.
It is best to get to the wood before it starts to decay as there is no going back and often it will need replacing if you leave it too long.
